Two years ago I was just a normal piano teacher getting angry at the radio.
In 2021 I stood for Cornwall Council for the first time and got elected. I am proud that local people decided to put their trust in me to represent them and I hope I have lived up to their expectations. I originally put myself forward for election as I was fed up with watching politicians bash each other and trying to score political points. As public servants one part of our job is holding people in power to account - the other part is achieving results. I will always put my constituents first, getting everyone around the table to achieve the best possible outcomes.
As parliamentary candidate for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, I am fighting for the following:
A Voice for Cornwall I want to get a devolution deal for Cornwall that gives us the powers and the funding we actually need. I opposed the recent Mayor of Cornwall plans because I didn't believe they gave Cornwall enough powers around adult social care, NHS integration or housing. Most concerning was that the plans would have put far too much power in the hands of one person. The Liberal Democrats support proper devolution, not a power grab or a vanity project.
Better Public Services The NHS is in crisis like never before. Hospital waiting times are through the roof, there are ambulances queueing outside the Royal Cornwall Hospital and people can't get to see a dentist. At the same time the private companies that deliver essential services such as our water and energy need better regulation to make sure they deliver on the basics before paying bonuses to their bosses and shareholders. All this needs robust action from government.
Climate Crisis Courage We have a responsibility to make sure we leave a world fit for our children’s future. Clean air, clean seas, clean energy supplies and nature recovery are key to a sustainable future. We need decisive long term action to meet these challenges - if we leave it to future generations it will be too late.
Fairer Society Our young people should be able to aspire to having a decent home and decent job without having to leave the County. Our older people need face to face services that they can access locally and with ease. We need proper social care that works and doesn’t leave people out in the cold. We need to address the wealth gap so that children have the same opportunities whichever area they live in and whichever school they attend. The Liberal Democrats want to offer people across the country a fair deal.
Healthy Democracy, Healing Divisions We are living in a society that is divided on so many different fronts. I believe the only way through this is by creating a stronger democracy where everyone has a voice, and no-one is frozen out. The way to that is to get back to the Nolan Principles, which means public servants acting with integrity and honour. We also need more diversity in politics, and part of that means diversity of viewpoint to avoid the dangers of groupthink that so often results in politicians being “out of touch”.
